Hoffacker Training

FireUp!

Ha!, preparation for next season has begun.  As of the time this note is dictated, we have only 277 days and 8 hours until we line up in the tunnel to pray and commence our first formal practice of the 2011 Spring season.  (That is 6:59p on February 21, 2011.)

Several athletes (and some parents) have pinged the coaches to learn how they specifically should be preparing for the future.  This is great.  For those we haven't followed up with yet, we will in just the next couple days.

In the meantime, ...

A couple of weeks ago, in a BLOG post outlining in broad terms what to do in the off-season, we addressed the school sponsored relationship with Hoffacker Health and Fitness.  In short, their services are a way to prepare and give oneself a platform for health beyond sport.  For our athletes, it is a structured, measured, fitness and conditioning program.  Hoffacker takes the arrangement we had with PASS to a new level.  ... adding measured discipline, consideration for the individual athlete's current status and the Coach's desire for the athlete's development for their role in the sport.  Part of the school's arrangement includes programs for our athletes in the summer and off-season (e.g. in the Fall and Winter for lacrosse players).

Before the athlete participates in those programs, they have a 15 minute personal assessment to get a baseline of where they are and guide the trainers in customizing a routine for them.  Athletes who play other sports may already be signed up for these sessions as those sports have moved forward in quickly embracing the service.  Now that we have finished our season, we've had lots of interest shown and are ready to get going.

So, specifically, we've set up times for the Women's Lacrosse Team (including rising freshmen) to complete their assessments.  Those times are Monday, the 24th, same afternoon as our gathering, at 2:00p, 2:15p, 2:30p, and 2:45p.  They can complete six assessments at a time.  Arrive 15 minutes before your time slot to turn in the two forms attached to this email and be fitted with a heart rate monitor.

Contact Coach Teeter via CTeeter625@gmail.com to reserve a spot and have forms sent to you.

Practice on Wednesday, 5/19, at 12:45p

Hey team - we know we'll be without the seniors/graduates, but we'll go ahead with practice on Wednesday.

We're going to spend some time, about an hour, on the field filming our playbook and clears.  This will be used to jump start our 2011 season next Spring.  Players who play primarily low D should wear a dark tshirt and their pinny on the black side.  Players who play primarly attack should wear a white tshirt and their pinny on the white side.  Pure middies should bring both types of tshirts and we'll assign you a position before you hit the locker room.

After that, we'll have equipment turn in.  Everyone should be prepared to turn in your black jersey, white jersey, skirt, and practice pinny.  (Your practice shorts are yours to keep.)  Everyone turning in their stuff on Wednesday will receive a (cool) IHSWLA State Tournament shirt and a Mrs. Teeter cookie!

Finally, we will vote on the Christian Leadership Award winner for our team.  Be giving some thought to who you think is your team member who most demonstrates a Christ-like attitude in being part of this team.

More posts coming about the state tournament final four being hosted at HCS this weekend, our team gathering next Monday afternoon, 5/24 (swimming at 4:00p, parents join for pitch in at 5:30p), the camp we host for middle schoolers, and camps you can attend.

Heads Up! Zionsville traffic on Saturday

Team departs HCS for Zionsville at 9:15a on Saturday for our game at 11:00a.

Directions to Mulberry Field are in a post from 5/13.

The following is a "heads up" shared by Karen Pok -

Hey--you might want to give all the parents a "heads up" regarding tomorrow--Zionsville has the Brick Street Market starting at 10 a.m. The main street of the town is blocked off and there are 175 vendors with booths peddling their wares. From what I recall, the traffic isn't too blocked up in the morning but does get worse as the day goes on. Everyone might want to allow a little more time to get to the fields in case it takes a bit longer to get through town.

See you tomorrow. FIRE UP!  Bring signs and cheering voices!

Spring Sports Banquet - Women's Lacrosse Comments

The HCS Women's lacrosse team, 40 members strong, adopted a theme going in to this season.  It was "Our Time" as we are only a second year varsity program, yet ready to be known and make an impact in our league.  Our few seniors and captains quickly modified the theme to "Our Time, His Time" to recognize that all we do, on the field and off, should be pleasing to Him.

As stated many times throughout the season, we will only measure the success of our team by God-centered relationships developed or fortified.  Obviously, we might not be able to really measure that for years to come.

However, ... it's amazing how a group can come together with a common set of ideals and amplify their relationships in the course of putting together a string of wins.  They want these games for one another.  ... as much a JV philosophy as a Varsity philosophy.

On the JV field, although there is a lot more to the game than the one who scores, every girl on the team scored except our goalie, who, by rule, isn't allowed to.  And, it seems that every girl was instrumental in getting that done.  The team won 15 games!

On the Varsity field, although only six of our twelve starters were starters in the game when we were eliminated in the playoffs by Noblesville last year, our entire squad adopted the pursuit of winning against that team as a common goal.  We got it done.  ... and, that has propelled us to a whole lot more as we rolled to victories over league powerhouses Penn, St. Joseph's, Brebeuf, North Central, and CATHEDRAL, ... and, by 10 goals, over CARMEL.  Our team has the top defense is the state based on goals allowed.  And, on the eve of our league's playoffs, based on power ratings, our 13-2 team is in a statistical tie for first place with three other teams who have dominated the Indiana lacrosse scene for 10 years.  Again, we're in our second year as a Varsity program.

After last year's HCS Spring Sports Awards Night, we had a senior who was recognized by United States Lacrosse as an Academic All-American.  That is (now alumni) Jenny Jones.

And, two players were recognized as first team all-state in just their Sophomore year.  These players distinguished themselves as two of the best thirteen players in a pool of 750 - 800 HS women's lacrosse players in the state.  In the two years previous, there were 25 seniors and 1 junior recognized with the honor.  Subsequently, they were chosen as two of the best underclassmen to represent Ky/Ind on a team that plays in a tournament in conjunction with the NCAA championships in Baltimore.  They've been honored with that distinction again two weeks ago.  These athletes are Julie Bergman and Anna Teeter.

Godspeed as this team enters the Zionsville regional with a game versus Brebeuf Thursday evening.

5/10 - 5/15 (BIG) Week at a Glance - EOY Gathering Date

FireUp Lacrosse Fans!

On Monday, 5/10, our Varsity practices from 7:00p to 9:00p.  Our JV team plays it's final game against visiting Guerin at 7:30p.  ... would like the JV on campus, in white jerseys covered by shooting shirts at 6:45p.

On Tuesday, 5/11, the Varsity Tournament team practices at 3:30p.  This is an optional practice for the JV squad.

On Wednesday, 5/12, the Varsity Tournament Team and the JV practice at 3:30p.  ... devotional at 5:00p.

On Thursday, 5/13, the Varsity Tournament Team will have a snack after school, load the bus at 4:15p, and travel to Zionsville Mulberry Park where we will play Brebeuf at 6:30p.  Seniors will travel separately that day from East 91st Street.  We are leaving so early because, should we take care of business versus Brebeuf, we'll be able to see our next round opponents play on an adjacent field before us.  Anyone on the JV roster is welcome to travel with the team.  Whether traveling with the team or arriving another way, JV players will wear team sweatshirts or shooting shirts and support the team from the bench side.

On Friday, 5/14, assuming a W on Thursday, the Varsity Tournament Team will practice at 3:30p.  Seniors are excused, of course, for graduation preparation.  This is an optional practice for the JV squad.

On Saturday, 5/15, assuming a W on Thursday, the Varsity Tournament Team will load the bus at HCS at 9:15a on Saturday morning to travel to Zionsville Mulberry Park for an 11:00a Divisional Final.  Again, the JV team is welcome to travel with the team or meet the team there.

The following week's schedule will be finalized as we see where we stand coming out of next weekend.  Should we advance, we'll practice Monday, 5/17, at 7:00p.  On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we'll practice at 1:00p after the half days of exams.  Also, advance or not next weekend, JV players will assemble on one of the half days for Hoffacker baseline testing.

AND, hold the late afternoon and evening of Monday, 5/24, for a lacrosse team pool party followed by a family gathering pitch in picnic.  Details to follow.

The "Off Season"

Although some of our most exciting lacrosse this season is still in front of us, our coaching staff is often asked, "what should I do to prepare for next year?".  With families busy planning their summers, we thought we'd get this post out.  Before hashing thru all this, know that Coach Teeter, Bergman or Flynn would be glad to meet with each family individually to discuss what is right for you and your athlete.

By far and away, the very best way to prepare for lacrosse in the Spring is to play a sport in the Fall.  Any sport?  Yes.  Of course, some are better suited for the lacrosse experience.  Obviously, soccer maps well to our sport with the field size, number of players on the field, teamwork, spacing, running without the ball, and the discipline.  Cross-country is a good way to condition in a structured environment with the added team competition element.  Volleyball too, especially at HCS, has the regiment and discipline and team coordination aspects that map well to our program.  (We know that some of you on this distribution consider those your primary sports.  That's great!  This perspective is addressing the lacrosse question listed above.)

A second way to prepare and give oneself a platform for health beyond sport is to participate in a structured, measured, fitness and conditioning program.  Some of you may be aware of the school's new arrangement with Hoffacker Fitness that offers programs to our athletes in the summer and off-season (e.g. in the Fall and Winter for lacrosse players).  We'll work to get you more information on this as individual athlete assessments are currently being scheduled by team but we have been focused on completing the season at hand.  In short, Hoffacker, takes the arrangement we had with PASS to a new level.  ... adding measured discipline, consideration for the individual athlete's current status and the Coach's desire for their development for their role in the sport.  For now, for more, see:

http://www.hoffackerfitness.com/

A third way to prepare is to play Club lacrosse as part of a regional club in Columbus, Ohio or Cincinnati, Ohio.  This is a major commitment of time and resources.  (If an athlete dedicated themself to conditioning and wall ball locally versus the travel time alone, they could improve their contributions to the sport substantially!)  However, it is excellent for players interested in playing beyond high school.  We have a couple of players who've done this in the past and we have a few players who will be participating at this level after the season concludes.  Talk to Coach Teeter or Bergman if interested in pursuing the game by playing with a regional club.

If not playing a Fall sport or conditioning, playing lacrosse in a Fall recreation league, indoor or outdoor, is really a supplement to other activities.  In and of itself, it is not a way to get to the next level.  Most programs in the area lack discipline and some lack organization.  That said, it is a great way to maintain relationships with teammates from our program and other teams and it sure beats not touching a stick at all.

Finally, with any of the options above, attending a collegiate camp for a few days in the summer can provide the focused instruction and atmosphere that motivates players to take their game to the next level.  We had 14 players on this year's team attend a camp last summer.  It shows!  There are a lot of great camps.  Two that our players have had success with and are in the area are the Northwestern/Amonte Camp and the Notre Dame Camp.  Links to each are embedded below.  As players indicate they are signed up for these camps (or others) we'll update this post with the names and dates.  That might aid others in their decision making on which to attend.

Again, don't hesitate to ping us for an opinion on these opportunities and how they would impact your athlete.
