The HCS Women's lacrosse team, 40 members strong, adopted a theme going in to this season. It was "Our Time" as we are only a second year varsity program, yet ready to be known and make an impact in our league. Our few seniors and captains quickly modified the theme to "Our Time, His Time" to recognize that all we do, on the field and off, should be pleasing to Him.
As stated many times throughout the season, we will only measure the success of our team by God-centered relationships developed or fortified. Obviously, we might not be able to really measure that for years to come.
However, ... it's amazing how a group can come together with a common set of ideals and amplify their relationships in the course of putting together a string of wins. They want these games for one another. ... as much a JV philosophy as a Varsity philosophy.
On the JV field, although there is a lot more to the game than the one who scores, every girl on the team scored except our goalie, who, by rule, isn't allowed to. And, it seems that every girl was instrumental in getting that done. The team won 15 games!
On the Varsity field, although only six of our twelve starters were starters in the game when we were eliminated in the playoffs by Noblesville last year, our entire squad adopted the pursuit of winning against that team as a common goal. We got it done. ... and, that has propelled us to a whole lot more as we rolled to victories over league powerhouses Penn, St. Joseph's, Brebeuf, North Central, and CATHEDRAL, ... and, by 10 goals, over CARMEL. Our team has the top defense is the state based on goals allowed. And, on the eve of our league's playoffs, based on power ratings, our 13-2 team is in a statistical tie for first place with three other teams who have dominated the Indiana lacrosse scene for 10 years. Again, we're in our second year as a Varsity program.
After last year's HCS Spring Sports Awards Night, we had a senior who was recognized by United States Lacrosse as an Academic All-American. That is (now alumni) Jenny Jones.
And, two players were recognized as first team all-state in just their Sophomore year. These players distinguished themselves as two of the best thirteen players in a pool of 750 - 800 HS women's lacrosse players in the state. In the two years previous, there were 25 seniors and 1 junior recognized with the honor. Subsequently, they were chosen as two of the best underclassmen to represent Ky/Ind on a team that plays in a tournament in conjunction with the NCAA championships in Baltimore. They've been honored with that distinction again two weeks ago. These athletes are Julie Bergman and Anna Teeter.
Godspeed as this team enters the Zionsville regional with a game versus Brebeuf Thursday evening.
