Perseverance Sports Lacrosse Camp

As the information about Perseverance Lacrosse Camp was buried in a broader post about things to do in Summer 2011 to prepare for lacrosse in Spring 2012, we wanted to highlight the camp here.  This is the camp that Coach Fairweather will host with other coaches with collegiate experience at Park Tudor starting June 6.

Preparing for Lacrosse in the Spring of 2012 in the Summer 2011

As of this post, we have just 264 days until our first practice on February 13, 2012.  (Tentatively, that practice will be for an hour at 3:30p and consist of "fun run" type activities.  We'll practice only 3 days a week for an hour each day for the first 3 weeks next year.)

"It's not the will to win, but, rather the will to prepare to win that produces champions."

It’s always been our adage that to prepare for lacrosse in the Spring, it’s best to play a Fall Sport.  The conditioning, regularity, discipline, relationships, diversity, and fun make that the best way to train even if you view lacrosse as your primary sport.  Godspeed to all of you who are participating on an HCS team this Fall.  There’ll be plenty of lacrosse after your Fall seasons before we hit the fields next Spring.  We note this here as we know some athletes jump right into the regimen of the Fall Sport now.  That's great.  Others will have the flexibility to consider the following events.

If you aren’t in a Fall Sport, there are a number of activities in which to engage.  The “best thing” varies by athlete.  Any one or combination of Coaches Fairweather, Burton, Flynn, Teeter, or Bergman  would be glad to talk with each athlete or athlete and their parents in coming up with a personal plan.  We’ve conducted these chats with only a couple athletes so far.  Level of commitment is not a barrier to figuring out what is the best way to be ready to contribute in 2012.

Hoffacker Zone training is available to all high school women out-of-season (non-Fall) athletes in a regular schedule this summer.  Every Monday and Wednesday at 8:00a, our team members can conduct conditioning.  Our team will actually workout at the same time as the soccer team as they prepare for the Fall.  There is overlap in our rosters and a lot of overlap in the types of athlete we like to build through this training.  Although some high school athletes and their families spend lots of money on this type of training, it is free.  Of course, we know some of you have experience with this training.  We encourage you to approach this program with a regular discipline for several weeks at a time to get the best results.

Next, the Coaches are available on a “come as you can” or a regular basis to work on various aspects of the game: Goalie, Individual D, Shooting, 8 meters, or just pure stick work.  Anyone wanting “private lessons” with Coach Fairweather, Coach Burton, or Coach Flynn can organize those directly with them.  Anyone organizing a group to meet with Coach Fairweather, Coach Burton, Coach Flynn or Coach Teeter will be covered as part of the program.  As always, individual Goalie training will be covered as a team expense.

Paige Burton              CoachKauffman2009@gmail.com
Tom Flynn                 TFlynn@mwinsulation.com
Christopher Teeter     CTeeter625@gmail.com

Finally, as many of you have been asking, we highly encourage the participation in a summer lacrosse camp or camps!  The results from this activity was in heavy evidence in the makeup of our Varsity squad this year.

There are lots of camps out there.  We are recommending two.  There is huge benefit to attending a camp with other HCS players.

First. We're very excited about this.  Coach Fairweather and some of her college teammates will be conducting a camp at Park Tudor June 6 - 9.  This is for high school athletes (including rising Freshmen) only.

          See:  www.perseverancesports.com

Next, we've had a lot of success with the Northwestern Camp over the last few years, including eight athletes who attended this camp last year and showed remarkable improvement.

          See:  www.amontesports.com

As always around the HCS lacrosse programs, do not let finances be a barrier to attending these camps.  There are a number of folks around the program who are willing to help out.  Simply touch base with Coach Teeter if any scholarship is required.  Further, do not hesitate to contact Coach Teeter with any questions about anything lacrosse along the way.  CTeeter625@gmail.com  (317) 750-5098

Team Meeting - Monday, May 16, 3:30p in Health Room

Hey, hey, lacrosse team!

We will have a team meeting at 3:30p Monday, May 16 in the Health Room.  The meeting will last until 4:45p.

Before and after the meeting, we will conduct equipment and uniform return.  Everyone should return their travel bag with skirt, practice pinny, white jersey, and black jersey.  Those with team issued sticks and goggles should bring them too.  We'll be prepared to re-issue sticks and goggles for summer use and even travel bags for those who are attending camps this summer.

On our agenda:  Christian Leadership and Most Valuable Player input, assignments for helping host the State Tournament, (quick) year in review, the road ahead/preparing for 2012 (including camps) and an overview to some of our changes for 2012.

Stay tuned as there will be a few more posts this weekend pertaining to the All-Region Team, our end of year gathering, and pointers to camps.

Big Week - 5/9 - 5/14

The IHSWLA is divided into four divisions of 5 - 7 teams based somewhat on geography.  Each division determines a Regional champ in a bracketed tournament this week.  The seedings are based on record in Divisional games during the season.  Our Division, the Central, has only 5 teams.  By order of finish: Zionsville (Z), Brebeuf (B), HCS, North Central (NC), and Herron (H).  The first 3 seeds get first round byes.  NC plays H in a first round game Monday.  The NC/H winner plays Zionsville at 6p on Wednesday at Zionsville.  B and HCS play at 8p on Wednesday at Zionsville.  The winner of those two games plays at 6p on Friday, again, at Zionsville.  The four Regional winners come together the following Friday and Saturday at Heritage Christian!

Continued Prayers for Annie

The Hunsicker family has asked for your continued friendship and prayers for Annie as she is again in the hospital.  The family is hoping for a speedy return home, but that hasn't happened as of quite yet.   We will have another "big card" for all the team to sign at Saturday's JV and Varsity games so everyone will get a chance to share with Annie.   If you have something else to bring to put on the card (funny pix, quote, googly eyes....) go ahead and bring that Saturday and we will markers, glue, tape etc.

Visitors are welcome at Riley Hospital, but Penny asks that you email her first to confirm timing is good: Penny.Hunsicker@heritagechristian.com

Week at A Glance - 4/18 - 4/24

Hey hey lacrosse fans,  FireUp!

Wild weekend!  That is the last place on our schedule where we have back to back days with games or even multiple Varsity games on one day.

Brief commentary before this week's schedule is presented:

Some have asked about our approach during the second game on Saturday.  As we discuss regularly during practice, we must prepare ourselves to be the best we can be against a nameless, faceless opponent.  In life, as well as in lacrosse, we don't know what lurks around the corner.  So, we prepare ourselves spiritually, relationally, academically, etc. to be ready for those moments.  A few games on our schedule are required as divisional opponents and a few are there as we accommodate the needs of other teams vis-a-vis minimum games or their schedule and travel logistics.  There is no reason to pummel a team you feel you can beat by 40 goals.  It doesn't fit with the principles of our school or team.  After a 10 goal spread, it doesn't even add to power ratings points used by the league to determine Final Four seeding.  So, we look for other ways to advance our program in those scenarios.

We'll share with you here, we had 13 unique goal scorers in our second game on Saturday.  Earlier in the season, we had a game where we had 14 unique scorers.  Some of the premier teams in the state will go all season with only 5 or 6 scorers.

There are lots of benefits to conducting a game this way.  Experienced players sometimes have to work even harder to get the lanes open and sticks open for a less developed player or out of position player to get a goal.  On the other end of the field, we got some work for a premier attacker playing low D.

Finally, team morale flourishes.  And, in helping grow the sport, the other team goes home with some degree of confidence compared to their other games.

Our schedule this week:

Monday - practice as scheduled 3:30p - 5:30p

Tuesday - we host Center Grove - JV reports at 5:00p, tunnel at 5:15p in whites (bring blacks), field at 5:25p, game at 6:00p.  Varsity reports at 5:55p.

Wednesday - practice as scheduled 3:30p - 5:00p  devotional 5:00p - 5:30p

Thursday - we host Bishop Chatard and conduct SENIOR NIGHT - JV reports at 5:00p, tunnel at 5:15p in whites (bring blacks), field at 5:25p, game at 6:00p.  Varsity reports at 5:55p.  Immediately following the JV game, we will conduct Senior Night on the west side of the field in front of the stands.  The Varsity game will start 30 minutes after the JV game.

Friday - Good Friday - bring a snack to munch after school - practice will start 30 minutes after high school dismissal and go for two hours.

Saturday - we host Homestead - JV reports at 9:00a, tunnel at 9:15a in whites (bring blacks), field at 9:20a, game at 10:00a.  Varsity reports at 9:55a.

Week at A Glance - Through SB11!

Hey Hey Lacrosse Fans!

By fast, we meant fast!  The pace only picks up from here.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week we have practice as posted (along with our devotional on Wednesday).

On Saturday, we are conducting a milestone event for our Program.  Along with Carmel, we are hosting two out of state teams:  Christian Academy of Louisville and Mount Notre Dame from Cincinnati.  These are two really good lacrosse programs that, like last weekend, should put us to a test.  The times have been tweaked from the original schedule posting but are accurately presented on our schedule page now.  Like last weekend, we will have a team meal in the Aux Gym available between games and healthy snacks throughout the day.  Thanks Mrs. Pok and Mrs. Teeter and all the many volunteers for the great food - hehe, we hope whoever made the cookies conducts an instant replay this weekend.  The JV plus Varsity swing players should report to campus at 9:00a.  ... Varsity at 9:55a.  As ALWAYS, bring both home white and black away jerseys.

On Monday, practice as posted.

On Tuesday, we host Carmel.  JV reports at 5:00p.  Varsity at 5:55p.

On Wednesday, our team's last practice before SB11, we will conduct picture day.  Our experience from previous years is that we need to remain flexible and plan on going long that day.

Thanks - from Mission Impact

Thank you to all who volunteered and especially to those who participated in the babysitting service project during the Mission Impact Banquet last Friday night.  Shout outs go to:  Steffi Pok, Margo Pok, Lindy Pok, Macy Freeman, Anna Teeter, Ellie Teeter, Rachel Bradney, Jessie Wolfe, Hope Canfield, and Rachel Just.

Prayers for Annie Hunsicker

Our prayers go out to freshman teammate #6 Annie Hunsicker.  Annie hasn't been able to join us on the field yet due to some health concerns which have her currently hospitalized.   We can't wait to have her back carrying on the long legacy of Hunsicker's playing lacrosse.

Last Saturday, between games, the team made a giant Get Well card, and tied a bright fleece blanket for Annie.   Both were delivered on Sunday by some of her teammates.  Visits to Annie are welcome this week at Riley Hospital for Children, downtown Indianapolis.

Get Well Soon, Annie!   300's await you :)

Week At A Glance - Varsity and JV Rosters

Hey hey Lacrosse Community -

Buckle in, here we go!  The rest of the school year will go very fast from here out!

As we begin games this week, we have some extra communications we want to put out:

Monday 3/14:

Practice will go until 5:45p Monday for JV and until 6:15 for Varsity.  From 5:30p - 5:45p, the JV team will be issued their uniforms.  From 5:30p - 6:00p, we'd like our Varsity roster to remain to cover some final preparations for our game on Tuesday then from 6:00p to 6:15p, they will be issued their uniforms.

For the first game, our Varsity roster will include (in alphabetical order):  Baldwin, Bergman, Blackburn, Bradney, Canfield, Elskus, Freeman, Fritz, Goff, Harms, Longardner, McGrew, Meador, Morris L., Ney, Nicks, Pok M., Pok S., Sato (DL), Sikes, Teeter A., Teeter E., Wolfe, and Yeary (DL).

Amongst those, six players will also be rostered with and start on JV, at least for the Tuesday HSE game:  Baldwin, Bradney, Canfield, Elskus, Fritz, and Teeter E.

The JV roster includes:  Alves, Boone, Ferrara, Hunsicker (DL), Just, Kelley, McAvoy, Morris K., Pok L., Reich, Story, Thomas, Yaraei, and Znachko.

Tuesday 3/15:

Our game day modus operandi is as follows.  For 6:00p JV games, we want the rostered players to be on campus by 5:00p, ready to go in the tunnel at 5:15p.  We take the field at 5:25p.  Players rostered for the Varsity game are expected to be on campus ready to support the JV by 5:55p.  (We'll talk about the sideline dress code and discipline on Monday.)  Varsity players leave for game preparations at the beginning of halftime.  Varsity games follow JV games after a 25 minutes break.

Wednesday 3/16 and Thursday 3/17:

Practice as listed on the schedule.

Friday 3/18:

We will only practice until 4:45p.  All teams across HCS stop at that time so the HCS Community can rally around Mission Impact.  Several members of our team are involved in conducting the evening and 10 members of our team will provide the childcare that night.

Saturday 3/19:

This is an all day affair that we host at HCS.  As indicated on the schedule, we have 3 JV games and 2 Varsity contests that day.  The 2 Varsity games begin and end the day.  (Cathedral will also host V and JV games at our field that day.)  Varsity reports at 8:00a that day.  JV needs to be on campus at 9:00a.  The team will have lunch following the first JV game shortly after noon.  Healthy snacks will also be available.  JV is not required to stay for the final Varsity game.

Monday 3/21:

Although most of our game nights begin with 6:00p JV starts, this night is the exception with a 5:30p start.  JV reports at 4:30p, Varsity at 5:25p.

Saturday, March 12, Ratings Day Scrimmages

FireUp lacrosse families!  This note is to let you know how Saturday will work as it's a little unusual compared to our regular games approach.  There'll be another note put out by Sunday afternoon outlining uniform distribution on Monday and our first "real" game Tuesday.

We are participating with 11 other teams in a Ratings Day for officials.  As part of official certification, they must be observed in 20 minutes of game time by higher rated officials.  So, there are a whole day of 20 minute scrimmages scheduled at a turf field at Westfield High School - 18250 North Union Street Westfield, IN 46074.   This is this first right turn North of Hwy 32 on 31/Meridian.

We have the best "draw" of the day by far!  We are in and out.  Our games against Guerin, North Central, and Culver are scheduled for 9:00a, 10:15a, and 11:15a.

CONTRARY to what we announced to the team on Thursday night, we want the rostered players (listed below) all to arrive at 8:15a.  Originally, we were platooning the rosters on playing time.  But due to some sick calls today, we'll go with everyone we were going to play for all three games.  There are a couple of exceptions of players who won't be in the first game and a couple who won't be in the last.  They'll be told at practice on Friday.

There is no bus leaving from school for this event.  (All of our away games after Spring Break will have to and from bus service.)  We ask that every non-senior player arrive and leave with a parent of a member of the team.  (No seniors are playing.)

Rostered players are:  Alves, Baldwin, Boone, Bradney, Canfield, Elskus, Ferrara, Harms, Just, Longardner, McAvoy, Meador, Morris K, Pok L, Pok M, Reich, Story, Teeter E, Wolfe, Yaraei, and Znachko.

Thursday, March 3rd, Guerin Scrimmages

Hey Hey Lacrosse Families!

We want to give everyone an overview of how Thursday night will work.

First off, we had previously indicated during the Call Out Meeting in December and then again during the Mother's Tea on Sunday that we would provide a "Lacrosse 101" seminar in conjunction with Thursday's scrimmages.  Although we want to put that off a bit, we will have a coach in the stands during the full field portion of the scrimmages to highlight what's happening on the field, explain what's being called, and answer any questions.  In a separate communication, we will announce a controlled classroom session to show some of the intricacies of the game.  That will occur either next Tuesday before the Chatard scrimmages or on Saturday, the 19th, in between our games when we are hosting a couple of other teams that will also play one another.

The outline for Thursday night is as follows:

We should be at school, prepping to take the field with our white pinnies on the outside at 6:45p  We take the field at 7:00p.  Everyone whether a 9 year player or an 8 day player will play Thursday night in a venue appropriate to their experience level.

No practice today - school is closed.

As scheduled, we'll go at 9:00a tomorrow.  Make sure to bring indoor shoes and a t-shirt to wear under your pinny.  We might be inside.  We might be outside.  Be prepared for both!

Please be on campus by 8:45a - ready to roll at 9:00a.

Looking ahead, as scheduled, our practice on Monday is at 7:00p under the lights!  Please be on campus by 6:45p, ready to roll at 7:00p.

Any player not having already conducted their concussion test should plan on doing that after school on Monday at 3:20p.  Meet Andy Shaffer, our trainer, in the training room and he will direct you from there.  You'll be good to go after 30 minutes.

Great practice! ... picture, Wednesday and Saturday Schedule confusion

Great practice today.  We're off to a great start despite the cold.  We are particularly excited about the 8 freshmen and 2 new sophomores that have joined the team.

There is some confusion amongst the team about Wednesday practices.  Yes, we practice from 3:30p - 5:30p every Wednesday.  At 4:45p or 5:00p - 5:30p we break to the Health Room to conduct a devotional.  (The 4:45p time reflects the change of venue.)  We'll get that corrected on the site.

And, we'll know what time we have practice this Saturday by end of practice tomorrow.

Gear, Practice Schedule and Weather Implications

Hey Hey, FireUp!

As of this post, our first practice is just 4 days, 5 hours, and 20 minutes away!

We've received a few questions about the weather forecast.  On days we don't have school, we don't practice.  Other than that, we convene.  We are blessed with facilities that we can put to use for reviewing film, talking thru strategies, and etc.  We go outside if the temperature is above freezing and we modify our practice routines accordingly.

Per attire, the sweatsuit and short/pinny components of the gear will be handed out on Tuesday before practice.  (Even those who just joined the team in the last couple weeks will have a loaner sweatshirt, shorts, and pinny issued.)  As we've discussed in the callout and subsequent meetings, every athlete should have their own leggings and long sleeve cold gear top.  Hat and gloves would be good for Tuesday too!

Our practice schedule has been posted since December.  However, it was pointed out just this morning that it is only listed under the Varsity link from the Team Schedule tab.  (This says "Girls Varsity LaCrosse" instead of "Women's Varsity Lacrosse".  (We're working to correct that!))  See:

http://www.highschoolsports.net/team/Heritage-Christian-School-Indianapolis-IN/LaCrosse/Varsity/Girls/

There will be a couple tweaks to the schedule.  However, they do not effect the first two weeks.

Reminder: First "Fun Run" is Wednesday the 27th at 3:30p

Our first "fun run" is Wednesday, the 27th.  Meet with Coach Kauffman in the lobby of the Gymnasium Building at 3:25p.  On "fun run" days when the temperature is below 40 degrees (e.g. this week), we will stay inside, using the mezzanine and stairs.  Fun runs last just 45 minutes.

The Hoffacker Zone Training Schedule for Women in out of season sports (this includes lacrosse) is on Mondays at 3:30p and Thursdays at 4:30p.  FireUp!

As we've discussed this is an excellent vehicle for getting in condition for the season.  The perfect time to start is now!  The Hoffacker staff is well aware of those athletes who will need to ease into the program versus those who are continuing in their conditioning and will conduct the training accordingly.

Additionally, Hoffacker has a GREAT incentive plan for athletes who attend five scheduled sessions in a row.  Show up to find out more.

The Hoffacker session plus our lacrosse "fun run" dates leading up to our first formal practice are as follows:

1/26  Fun Run   3:30p
1/27  Hoffacker 4:30p
1/31  Hoffacker 3:30p
2/2    Fun Run   3:30p
2/3    Hoffacker 4:30p
2/7    Hoffacker 3:30p
2/9    Fun Run   3:30p
2/10  Hoffacker 4:30p
2/14  Hoffacker 3:30p
2/16  Fun Run   3:30p
2/17  Hoffacker 4:30p
2/21  Hoffacker 3:30p  (President's Day)
2/22  First Practice  3:30p
